One-bag method

How to pack for a weekend with one personal item

A personal-item trip works when the packing list follows the bag's real shape and the trip's real schedule.

Measure before you plan

Confirm the current personal-item allowance for the exact carrier and fare. Measure the packed bag, including wheels, handles, and overfilled pockets. A soft bag is not compliant if it cannot fit the airline's sizer.

Pack in priority order

  • First: identification, medication, travel documents, wallet, and phone
  • Second: a compact clothing capsule
  • Third: essential toiletries and chargers
  • Fourth: comfort extras that still fit without compression

Use the bag's zones

Place flat items against the back panel, dense items low and close to your body, and frequently used items near the opening. Fill shoes with socks or small soft items. Avoid stacking many tiny pouches that waste the spaces between them.

Protect the return journey

  • Bring a foldable tote only if your fare permits a second item later
  • Keep a small laundry bag
  • Do not plan to sit on the bag to close it
  • Reserve a little space for a snack or one modest purchase
  • Repack once at home before trusting the system on departure day
