Packing cubes: when they help and when they waste space

Packing cubes are organizers, not magic. The right type depends on the bag, fabric, and how often you move accommodation.

Use standard cubes for organization

Standard lightweight cubes make categories easy to find and transfer between a suitcase and a drawer. They are most useful on multi-stop trips or when two travellers share one case.

Use compression selectively

Compression cubes reduce the volume of soft, lofty clothing, but they do not reduce weight and can create a dense, awkward block. They offer little benefit for jeans, structured garments, shoes, or already compact fabrics.

Match the cube to the bag

  • Measure the interior rather than relying only on litre capacity
  • Use fewer larger rectangles in a boxy suitcase
  • Use flexible pouches in a tapered backpack
  • Keep frequently used items outside the deepest cube
  • Avoid buying a set with shapes your bag cannot use

Skip cubes when simplicity wins

For a one-night trip, a small personal item, or a bag with excellent built-in compartments, cubes can add weight and seams without improving access. Test the same list with and without them before deciding.
